BOOK CLUB QUESTIONS for THE BUNCO CLUB
SPOILER ALERT!Do not read these questions until you've finished the book!
1. How realistic was the
characterization? Was there one of the eight women you would most like
to meet and why? One you would rather not know and why? Did you have a
favorite/least favorite chapter and did that correspond with your
favorite/least favorite character?
2. Did
you enjoy the point of view changing each month as the Bunco box of supplies
changed hands? Why or why not?
3. Did
any of the characters or their scenarios surprise you? Which ones?
4. How
does the setting figure into the book? Did you feel you were experiencing the
seasons and places in which the book was set? Was a particular scene memorable/vivid
to you?
5. Did
the actions and the situations of the characters seem plausible? Why? Why not?
6. Do
you feel/understand Rosa’s growing devastation about her son as the book
progresses? Will Rosa and Terry’s relationship survive the daily agony of a
missing child? Were you surprised Ricky was still missing at the end of the
book? If Rosa was your friend, what advice/help would you give her?
7. Was
Marge right to keep her first-born a secret from her children and friends? Do
you think her children should have been angrier when they learned of their half-brother
or is it evidence of Marge being a good mother that they were so understanding?
8. What
more or what different could Helen have done to protect her daughter from
bullying? Is there a point when enough is enough and you remove your child from
a bullying situation at school or do you tell them to toughen up and stick it
out?
9. Was
Phree’s discovery of the Mayflower treasures exciting? Believable? Did you
learn anything about the pilgrims or the Mayflower that you didn’t already
know?
10. Should
Nedra continue working for Excel Chicago
or do you think she is ready to peruse a career as a writer?
11. Did
Nancy frustrate you as much as she did the women in the Bunco Club by not being
able to commit to a possible relationship with Michael? Why was she so unsure
of herself?
12. Lettie
appears to have it “all together”. Do you think she has a weak spot that she is
keeping hidden even from herself? Is she an odd match as best friend to Rosa or
do their personalities complement each other? Do you have a good friend who is
your complete opposite?
13. Do
you know anyone who exhibits hoarding issues? Are they mild or full blown? Is
Beth’s situation under control as long as she can stay “organized” or does she
still have a problem that needs to be addressed? Do you think her husband will
figure out what she is doing and what do you think his reaction will be?
14. Did
the book end the way you expected? Were you disappointed, surprised, or happy
when you reached the end of the book? Did you want the stories of the women to
keep going? Would you read a sequel?
15. Would
you recommend this book to other readers?
